Community oral health

I need help as where to go to find information. I am in the Devil's advocate group in community health class. If anyone knows some helpful ways to get information can you please let me know, I would really appreciate it.

Flouride

Today in clinic I passed off my Fluoride treatment with instructor Skeen. I practiced placing sealants on Joelle. I placed sealants on Joelle's premolars in mandibular arch, it was a lot of fun.

Intra-oral Camera

Today I passed off the intra-oral camera today on Brooke. It was messy to do the Flouride treatment today. Also polished 1/2 side of mouth and brushed the other half of the mouth. I started working on the posterior instrumentation today for the first time, it still feels awkward to me.

Concepts of Community Oral Health

Ch. 6 Dental Health Education and Promotion- It is necessary as a health educator that education involves much more than simply knowing and regurgitating information. It is our responsibility know how to communicate effectively with the population or community we are working in to know their background and their value system in order to treat them.

CH.7 Lesson Plan Development- The lesson development plan starts: (1) Assessment which involves targeting populations' needs, interests, abilities, and resources. (2) Dental Hygiene diagnosis which formulates the findings from assessment and also priortizes goals. (3)Planning involves the formulation of goal and selecting a appropriate teaching style. (4) Implementation- means being prepared and what characteristics that make a good teacher. Last (5) Evaluation- evaluating steps 1-4.
In summary a significant step in presenting and promoting dental health is being prepared.

CH. 8 Target Populations- Knowing the type of population that you will be treating is important because their are so many different types of cultures. Learning will help to eliminate some of the barriers that we face in treating our patients.

CH. 9 Program Planning- Also explains what Ch. 7 goes over in development plan of (1)Assessment (2)Dental hygiene diagnosis (3) Planning (4)Implementation (5) Evaluation.
I feel that it is good to give back to your community of the knowledge you have gained through education and experience. It also helps you as a hygienist to learn from the experiences of promoting oral health in your community of different ways to teach effectively.

Community Health

When I was reading I found it interesting that in a survey done in 1990 of the demographics of dental hygienists. The study revealed that Germany ranked lowest with only 90 hygienists to serve a population of 81 million. The number of dentists is 55,000, which provides a ratio of one hygienist to 647 dentists or one hygienist to 952,941 potential patients. THe highest number of hygienists was in Japan withe 157,941 to 85,518 dentists, or a ratio of almost two hygienists for every dentist. WOW!! It would be interesting to see if there has been a recent study done on this to see if things have change since 1990.
